Gene Robinson (Genomics of Neural and Behavioral Plasticity, Entomology) has been named a recipient of the 2009 National Institutes of Health Pioneer Award.
Robinson’s award is $2.5 million in direct costs over five years. The award enables promising young researchers to pursue high-impact, transformative research in the fields of biomedical and behavioral science.
According to the NIH, Robinson will use his Pioneer Award to investigate in molecular terms how to transform the brain’s reward system from a selfish to an altruistic orientation, with the goal of achieving a new understanding of drug addiction and other diseases.

Gene Robinson (Genomics of Neural and Behavioral Plasticity, Entomology) was recently selected as a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America (ESA). The selection as a Fellow acknowledges outstanding contributions in one or more of the following: research, teaching, extension, or administration. The 2009 Fellows will be recognized during the 2009 ESA Annual Meeting, which will be held December 13-16 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Lawrence Schook (Regenerative Biology and Tissue Engineering, Animal Sciences) has been chosen as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in the Department of Genetics and General Biology (genomics, immunology, development, cell biology, and molecular biology) in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Salzburg. The award runs from March - June 2010.

Nathan D. Price (Biocomplexity, Molecular Bioengineering of Biomass Conversion, Precision Proteomics, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) Nathan Price is the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award. The award is given to junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar. The title of his research grant is "CAREER: Systems biology and engineering of Clostridium beijerinckii for enhanced butanol production".

Melissa M. Edwards (Director of Communications) has received the 2008 Campus Public Affairs Award for Communications and Marketing Excellence. She was recognized for her media relations efforts on behalf of the IGB.

Phillip A. Newmark (Regenerative Biology and Tissue Engineering, Cell and Developmental Biology), and Wilfred A. van der Donk (Mining Microbial Genomes for Novel Antibiotics, Chemistry) have been named Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators. Newmark and van der Donk are among 56 biomedical scientists chosen from 1,070 applications submitted in a nationwide competition.

Harris A. Lewin (Director, Animal Sciences) has been elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry in recognition for his contributions to the fields of immunogenetics and comparative mammalian genomics. He was the only American in a group of seven new foreign members elected during the annual meeting in December 2007.

Nathan D. Price (Biocomplexity, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) has received the “Howard Temin Pathway to Independence Award in Cancer Research” from National Institutes of Helath.

Huimin Zhao (Mining Microbial Genomes for Novel Antibiotics, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) has received a Young Investigator Award from the American Chemical Society’s Division of Biochemical Technology.

Paul J. Hergenrother (Precision Proteomics, Chemistry) has received the 2008 Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry from the American Chemical Society.

Ryan C. Bailey (Precision Proteomics, Chemistry) was one of 29 scientists who received the National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award for 2007.
